High Flight
John Gillespie Magee,
Jr.
|
Oh, I have
slipped the surly bonds of earth, And danced the skies on
laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've
climbed and joined the tumbling mirth Of sun-split clouds -- and done
a hundred things You have not dreamed of -- wheeled and soared and
swung High in the sunlit silence, Hov'ring there, I've chased the
shouting wind along and flung My eager craft through footless halls of
air.
Up, up the
long, delirious, burning blue I've topped the wind-swept heights with
easy grace, Where never lark, or even eagle, flew; And, while with
silent, lifting mind I've trod The high untrespassed sanctity of
space, Put out my hand, and touched the face of God. |

Written by a 19-year-old
American volunteer with the Royal Canadian Air force,
who was killed in action December 11, 1941.

MIA/KIA Colonel Keith Heggen
DATE OF Birth: 1 September 1931
RANK: Lieutenant Colonel, USAF
DATE OF MISSION: 21 December 1972
TAKE-OFF TIME: 1208 Local Guam Time
VIET NAM WALL PANEL:
01W - - Line 100
 |
Col. Heggen was in
the lead aircraft of a three-ship cell launched from Andersen AFB, Guam. The purpose of
the mission was to bomb enemy targets near Hanoi, North Vietnam. Entering the target area,
the force encountered heavy surface-to-air missile (SAM) fire. At 6:10AM, Local Vietnam
Time, Colonel Heggen's aircraft was hit and instantly exploded into flames. Col. Heggen
was in the instructor pilot's seat in the upper compartment and would have had to use the
Navigator's hatch in the lower compartment to leave the aircraft. The aircraft commander
saw Colonel Heggen starting down the stairs, presumably to bail out, but the aircraft was
in a steep dive with rapidly increasing airspeed. Colonel Heggen was able to clear the
burning aircraft and parachuted to safety. Listed as Missing-In-Action (MIA) Col. Heggen
however gravely injured was captured by the Viet Cong and taken to a hospital were Colonel
Heggen died of his injuries, 26 December 1972.
During an official visit to Hanoi in May
1973, representatives of the Four-Party Joint Military Team and specialist from the US
Joint Casualty Resolution Center were shown the grave in the Van Dien Cemetery where,
according to the North Vietnamese, Colonel Heggen was interred. As evidenced by a
photograph taken by visitors, the grave contained a marker with Vietnamese lettering, the
initials "K.R.H" and the date of death "26.12.72." Word was received
on 8 March 1974 the North Vietnamese government agreed to allow an American aircraft to
enter Hanoi, North Vietnam, on 13 March to recover the remains of 11 US service members
who died in captivity. The remains were transported to the Central Identification
Laboratory in Thailand. Col. Heggen's remains were included in this increment and were
positively identified.

MIA/KIA CMS Charlie Poole
DATE OF Birth: 07 June 1932
RANK: Chief Master Sergeant, USAF
DATE OF MISSION: 19 December 1972
VIET NAM WALL PANEL: 01W - - Line
96
On December 19, Capt. Hal K. Wilson was in the lead
aircraft of a B52 cell from Utapao. Also on board his aircraft were crew men
MAJ Fernando Alexander, CAPT Charles A. Brown, Jr., CAPT Henry C. Barrows,
CAPT Richard W. Cooper Jr., and SGT Charlie S. Poole (tailgunner).
Wilson's aircraft was hit by a SAM near his target area
and crashed in the early morning hours, sustaining damage to the fuselage.
In the ensuing fire, there was no time for orderly bailout, but as later
examination of radio tapes indicated, all six crewmen deployed their
parachutes and evidently safely ejected. The aircraft damage report
indicated that all six men were prisoner.
Radio Hanoi announced in news broadcasts between 19 and
22 December that the six crewmen had been captured. When the war ended,
however, only four of the crew returned from Hanoi prisons. Hanoi has
remained silent about the fate of Charlie Poole and Richard Cooper.

Hoa Lo Prison (Hanoi Hilton)
About one
fifth of the Hoa Lo Prison (Hanoi Hilton) is left and most of it is devoted
to a history of how the French mistreated Vietnamese prisoners. There are
three small rooms where they propagandize the humane treatment of American
POWs (left panel below). A Navy pilot from Coronado, who was shot down in
North Vietnam and was a POW for 7 1/2 years, spent much of his time in the
Hanoi Hilton. He made it clear that the message on humane treatment was not
true. The right panel is a montage of POWs with a caption in English that
reads: "American Pilots, Of B-52 Plane, Was Shot Down In 12 Days And Nights
Campaign In December 1972 By Ha'Noi People And Soldiers"
