The B-52 Memorial Park at Orlando International Airport (formally known
as McCoy Air Force Base.) has been restored. As you may know, there is a B-52D permanently
mounted at the park that once belonged to the 306th Bomb Wing (Tail # 687).
The ceremony was held at 10:00 AM on Memorial
Day (Monday, May 29, 2000). More than 150 local citizens and 306th Bomb Wing members attended to once
again memorialize, celebrate and rededicate both the B-52 and the park. Local TV, radio,
and newspapers were also there.
Joshua Roth, a 14 year old
Life Scout in Boy Scout Troop 225 in Orlando, Florida "took on" Memorial Park
Restoration as a project to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. Joshua met
the guidelines for an Eagle Project ( must be for a non-profit
organization, must benefit the community or other religious institution and, the
scout may not use any of his money to fund the project). Joshuas' endeavor and
patriotism are to be commended by former 306th Bomb Wing members.
Joshua received news articles, pictures, etc., and included them on a table at the ceremony to show history and information on
specific sorties that 687 flew.
